The Awards Committee is pleased to announce the winner of the 2017 Mary Hammond Iber Spring Conference Scholarship: Laura Sauser. Laura is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science and a part-time reference librarian at Kirkwood Community College.

When asked how the conference theme "Looking in, reaching out: Whom do we serve?" is related to her profession goals, Laura responded with this essay:

"Librarianship is a mid-career change for me. I will graduate this May with my master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Iowa. My somewhat circuitous path to librarianship has included positions in fundraising, nonprofit management, and communications. Outreach, engagement, and community relations are overarching themes that have been present throughout my career.

I've been thinking a lot lately about my future aspirations and how I can best leverage my past experience, strengths, and newfound skills in this new career path. When I reflect on how the theme, "Looking in, reaching out: Whom do we serve?", applies to my professional goals, one specific goal comes to mind:

To draw upon my strengths and experience in relationship building, outreach, advocacy, and engagement to serve the library profession in a leadership role.

I hope to realize this goal through my future involvement with ACRL at the state and local level. As a first-time attendee, I look forward to attending the Iowa ACRL Conference to learn how the speakers tie their presentations into this year's theme, to continue to build my professional network, and start on my path to becoming an active member of this organization. A Mary Hammond Iber Spring Conference Scholarship will support my immersion in this new field and help shape my future contributions to librarianship."

At the conference on Friday, please make sure to introduce yourself to Laura and welcome her to ILA/ACRL!
