September 2012 Newsletter

President's Piece

It's that time of year again. The air is beginning to cool just a bit (finally!), leaves are donning a hint of red or gold, and students are back on campus. The start of a new academic year is in full force and we are adjusting to the quickened pace of life. The season has released an energy and expectation for a successful semester.

Iowa ACRL is also gearing up for a successful fall. On the heels of a fantastic Spring Conference in Decorah, we are set to head to Dubuque in a few weeks for the Iowa Library Association's Annual Conference. The Fall Program Committee has worked hard to identify timely topics and speakers for the conference. As a result, our chapter will sponsor four sessions that will appeal to many of us:

  • The Possibilities and Limits of Fair Use: The National Conversation
  • To Make a Long Story Short: Libraries and Copyright Today
  • e-Content and Its Discontents
  • High School to College

More information about each session is available in this newsletter or on the ILA website. If you haven't yet registered for the conference, please do so soon. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Nominating Committee has also been working hard to complete the makeup of our committees and to fill out our officer slate for 2013. Bios for the officer candidates are available in this newsletter. Voting will take place in October, after the ILA conference. "ILA/ACRL is an organization that has developed from the efforts of many members, and its growth will continue because of those that are willing to serve." A huge thank-you to the officer candidates and new committee members and chairs for stepping forward!

Finally, in order for our chapter to continue serving your needs, we need your input. Later this fall, we'll conduct a survey that will ask for your thoughts and ideas on how to move forward. This is an organization created to connect, educate, and advocate. We will be asking you for feedback on what has worked well in the past and how we will move forward in the future. Please look for that survey yet this fall and please take a few minutes to tell us what you think!

Best wishes for a great semester!
