President's Piece

It is hard to believe that the fall semester and 2012 are drawing to a close. It feels as though the year has barely started, and yet we are winding down with only a few weeks left. Our chapter has had a quietly productive year because of the wonderful work of our committees and the Executive Board and I've included highlights below.

Spring Conference

The conference was held May 25th in beautiful Decorah, Iowa. Ninety-four members attended the conference and Michael Porter (aka Libraryman) was our keynote speaker. Many also attended the pre-conference social hosted by Seed Savers Exchange, complete with wonderful food, scenery, and conversation! The Spring Conference Committee worked tirelessly and gave us a great event.

Fall Program at ILA

The Fall Program Committee brought us four timely sessions for the Iowa Library Association conference in Dubuque. All sessions were very well attended.

  • The Possibilities and Limits of Fair Use: the National Conversation
  • To Make a Long Story Short: Libraries and Copyright Today
  • E-Content and Its Discontents
  • High School to College

Chapter Committees

The Nominating Committee has ensured that we have full committees and officer team for 2013. This is so important in our effort to serve chapter members each year. Our committees are our success!

This year the Awards Committee selected Jean Donham as recipient of the ILA/ACRL Research Award. A Spring Conference Scholarship was awarded to Jennifer Ryan, and three Fall Conference Scholarships went to Katelyn Wolff, Rebecca Philipsen, and Emily Shaw.

Both the Membership and Directory Committees spent time updating data and identifying potential new members. Their work will be increasingly more vital as in the coming year.

This is the sixth and final newsletter for 2012. The Newsletter Committee has done tremendous work gathering information and keeping us up-to-date on chapter activities.

Did you know the chapter currently offers a variety of ways to stay in touch? Member of the Electronic Communications Committee keep the ILA/ACRL website current and update members with chapter news via the chapter listerv, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn!

Pam Rees heads the ILA/ACRL K-12/Higher Ed Partnership Ad Hoc Committee that has created a formal partnership with the Iowa Association of School Librarians to address information literacy readiness of incoming college freshman. This work will continue into 2013.

Membership Survey

A member survey was conducted this fall for the first time in many years. This was an opportunity for the Executive Board to hear from you. The good news is that the chapter seems to be moving in the right direction in meeting the needs of the members. Results of the survey will be used in 2013 to provide guidance to the committees and officers to build an even stronger and more vibrant chapter.

It has been wonderful working with so many talented and eager folks this year. Thank you all for a fantastic year.

Warmest wishes,
Rebecca Funke
ILA/ACRL President
